Lent is a disciplined, focused season for spiritual "house cleaning," not gloomy self-denial, but a joyful journey of following Jesus to the cross, clearing away distractions to rediscover God's steadfast love, mercy, and the hope of new creation, allowing Christians to align their lives with God's kingdom way rather than the world's. It's about repentance for the right reasons—God's love—and preparing for the resurrection by embracing Jesus's path of suffering and redemption, ultimately finding new life in him.
Key aspects of Lent:
Spiritual Housekeeping: Lent is a time to sweep out the cobwebs of sin and distraction, cleaning up our spiritual lives to see things clearly and reorient our focus.
Following Jesus: It's a journey following Jesus's path to the cross, learning his way, even when costly, and understanding his suffering as taking on the world's pain.
Focus on God's Love: The core isn't self-focus but returning to God, who is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, which sustains us.
Discipline & Confession: Practices like fasting and confession are tools for honesty, not punishment, opening us to God's cleansing and readiness for good things.
Hope in Resurrection: It's a movement from darkness to light, recognizing the story of Jesus's suffering and resurrection as the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan for new creation.
Kingdom Living: By following Jesus's way, we learn to live out God's kingdom in the world, contrasting it with worldly ways.
